Our Founding Story
Our Community is our
Future full of hope and pride
This organisation was not born in a boardroom. It was born from grief, worry, and love, the kind that only comes from belonging somewhere.
We watched the art of community, long evenings under acacia trees, elders passing wisdom to the young, begin to erode. Young men were dying by suicide in numbers that should have shaken everyone. The hillsides that fed our ancestors' herds were going bare. So in 2024, we sat together, as neighbours and relatives, and asked the only question that mattered: what would it take for our communities to truly thrive again?
"Every community carries the seeds of its own strength. Our work is simply to water them."
— Founders, Samburu Wellness & Resilience
Built by the community, for the community.
Samburu Wellness & Resilience was founded by local change makers who believed lasting solutions should come from within the community. We work alongside women, youth, elders, and partners to strengthen wellbeing, protect culture, and build resilient livelihoods.
"Strong communities create lasting change."
The Context
"Poverty is never one-dimensional — and neither is healing."
Samburu County sits in northern Kenya — dramatic landscapes, proud pastoralist heritage, extraordinary people. It is also one of Kenya's most marginalised counties, with some of the country's lowest rates of access to healthcare, education, and economic opportunity.
Its communities have survived drought, conflict, and decades of neglect through extraordinary solidarity. Our role is not to rescue — it is to stand with them. Addressed together, women's empowerment, youth resilience, community care, and land stewardship don't just help. They make transformation inevitable.
What We Do
Four Pillars of
Community Transformation
Each pillar is rooted in what Samburu people themselves said they needed most — not in an imported model.
Passing on more than tradition.
Every generation carries something worth preserving. We bring elders and young people together to share knowledge, celebrate identity, and keep Samburu culture alive for generations to come.
- —Shared stories and oral history
- —Traditional crafts and cultural practices
- —Stronger identity, stronger communities
Empowered women. Inspired youth.
When women have the tools to thrive, families and communities grow stronger. We support women and young people with practical skills, leadership, financial literacy, and opportunities to build a better future.
A better living starts with a better choice.
Every family deserves an income that lasts. We help communities turn local ideas into sustainable livelihoods that protect natural resources, strengthen resilience, and create opportunities for future generations.
A thriving landscape starts with its people.
When communities care for the land, the land continues to care for them. We support local conservation efforts that restore ecosystems, strengthen resilience, and safeguard Samburu’s natural heritage for generations to come.
Impact in Numbers
What Showing Up Looks Like
We don't measure success in donor reports. We measure it in the woman who hasn't missed a school fees payment in two years, the hillside with shade again, the young man who reached out before it was too late.
